Wagga Saleyards Ramp Up with Major Infrastructure Upgrade

The Wagga Wagga Livestock Marketing Centre (WWLMC) is currently undergoing a major infrastructure upgrade, reinforcing its position as one of Australia’s premier livestock selling centres. Designed to enhance safety, animal welfare, and operational efficiency, the project includes the installation of new loading ramps, lead-up pens, and key infrastructure to meet rising demand.

Central to the project are 6 new Under and Over Cattle Ramps, designed to safely and efficiently load both decks of B-doubles and road trains — an essential feature as WWLMC continues to receive increasing volumes of stock from Victoria and New South Wales.

Paul Martin, WWLMC Saleyard Manager, said the response from transport operators has been outstanding.

“We’ve had really positive feedback from the truck drivers. The ramps make it safer and quicker to unload, especially with the volume of large vehicles we’re now handling. That kind of improvement has a ripple effect right through sale days,” he said.

“With the current seasonal conditions, we’re seeing higher volumes from both Vic and NSW, with more road trains and B-doubles than ever before. These upgrades put us in a better position to process stock during peak periods going forward.”

A key upgrade includes the installation of 6 industry-leading Under and Over Cattle Ramps designed to safely and efficiently load both decks of B-doubles and road trains from both decks. The ramps are supported by best-practice lead-up pens, complete with walkways and well-placed gates with handles, allowing carriers to manage cattle flow on and off trucks without direct contact risk in high pressure pens.

This significantly reduces risk and improves flow, especially during high throughput periods.

The ramp upgrades are being installed in a staged approach to minimise impact on drivers and sale days

“With the current seasonal conditions, we’re seeing higher volumes from both Vic and NSW, with more road trains and B-doubles than ever before. These upgrades put us in a better position to process stock during peak periods going forward.”

The sheep load out renovation includes 18 new ramps including 9 state-of-the-art 9 metre adjustable ramps, capable of loading to the fourth deck, and 9 trailer ramps designed for stock crates and smaller vehicles.

All ramp infrastructure is designed and built to exceed the Australian Standard for Livestock Loading Ramps and Forcing Pens (AS 5340), reflecting WWLMC’s ongoing commitment to best practice and safety.

The work is being delivered by ProWay Livestock Equipment, a long-standing infrastructure partner to WWLMC with a relationship spanning over two decades.

Bill Thomas, ProWay’s Commercial Infrastructure Designer, said the project carries special significance for the team.

“Most of our work is spread across Australia and increasingly overseas, so having WWLMC literally around the corner makes the logistics of this project more manageable,” Bill said.

“There’s a level of pride for the team contributing to local infrastructure. The work we do here supports the Wagga economy — and it’s great to help strengthen a facility that means so much to the region.”

Livestock carriers are utilising the upgrades with weekly sales seeing high throughputs.

Over the past 20 years, ProWay has helped deliver almost every major upgrade at the centre, including custom-built drafting systems, yard upgrades, civil works, new pedestrian bridge and facility access points.

Paul Martin said the collaboration has been a key part of the centre’s ongoing success.

“ProWay understand what’s needed in a high throughput environment like this. We can’t miss sale dates and ProWay work in a staged approach to minimise impact on all parties.

“Their professionalism, experience, and support have been integral to the standard we’ve been able to set here at Wagga.”

WWLMC is also progressing a long-term master plan focused on growth, technology integration, and continuous improvement.

“We’re investing in infrastructure, people, and systems to ensure we remain a leader and preference sale facility — not just in scale, but in how we manage livestock, support the supply chain, and prioritise safety and welfare at every level,” Paul said.

“The value ProWay bring to the centre goes beyond infrastructure upgrades. Their service, follow-up and attention to detail are unmatched — and the quality of their product speaks for itself. It gives us confidence that what we’re building today will still be performing years down the track.”
