Shearing Shed Board Configurations

ProWay products are proudly designed and manufactured in Australia, and installed all over the world.

Premium Materials and Quality Fabrication Improve Safety & Efficiency

ProWay offer three premium board configurations and can be designed to suit existing and new shed structures including Curved, Sawtooth and Straight arrangements.

Shearing Board Configurations

In most new sheds we build raised boards which offer numerous benefits such as chutes which return shorn sheep under grating as well as less bending for roustabouts when removing stained wool and picking up locks and fleeces.

ProWay boards are highly regarded by woolgrowers and shearers for our attention to detail, features and premium materials. All boards feature a generous shelf and hooks for storage of equipment. ProWay also supply electrical fitout plans which outline where powerpoints are best located at each stand.

Curved Board

ProWay’s curved board comprises individual stands around an arc providing an optimal, raised board solution giving full access to wool handler’s while allowing under grating, shorn sheep storage and shearers have more space than with a conventional straight board system.

Curved board provides a range of benefits:

  • front-fill catching pens are better implemented and allow for simpler filling throughout shearing as sheep follow the curved design
  • reduced walking distance for wool handlers and roustabouts moving between stands, bins, wool tables or press, also reduces time and effort to get the job done
  • the length of drag for each sheep is reduced but most importantly the need to turn when dragging is also minimised. Research has shown that turning while dragging is a major cause of back and knee injury
  • shearers have a greater view of their co-workers with an unobstructed view of the whole wool room
  • shearers work in relative close contact with each other and can move around the board freely to assist others during difficulty
  • each shearer has an individual work area, including a large shelf for combs, cutters, tool boxes etc.
  • all stands have an individual electrical cut out button in case of an emergency.

ProWay have designed and installed sawtooth as well as individual straight sections on radial curves for clients like you requiring anywhere from two to 12 stands and have the capability to custom design to suit individual requirements.

Our design library and experience allows us to customise a shed fitout specific to your needs.

Sawtooth Board

Sawtooth Board

ProWay’s unique Sawtooth board design maximises safety and efficiency for your shearers and wool handlers. The Sawtooth design meets all relevant Workplace, Health and Safety codes and has been described by Workcover as the safest design they have seen.

The Sawtooth design provides a range of benefits:

  • minimises the length of the drag for each shearer but most importantly minimises the need to turn when dragging. Research has shown that turning while dragging is a major cause of back and knee injury.
  • each shearer has a separate work area including a large shelf for combs, cutters, tool boxes etc. This minimises the chance of injury caused by lost sheep and out of position shearers.
  • chutes are recessed into the board and send sheep under the grating into individual count out pens. Sheep tend to fall down the chute rather than needing to be pushed.
  • chutes are 600mm wide providing plenty of room for rams and larger sheep.
  • a handrail along the board protects shearers from falling off.
  • wool handlers have full access around the individual work platform and don’t need to bend over to ground level to reach a fleece or pick up locks.
  • All stands have an individual electrical cut out button in case of an emergency.

Straight Board

ProWay’s straight boards are regarded as the best quality in the industry. We recommend a raised board for a number of workplace benefits however can build single level working spaces where necessary.

Straight board benefits include:

  • equipped with wide recessed chutes for easy sheep release into individual catching pens. This makes counting out at cut-outs a simpler process. We can also install digital counters in the chutes to save on processing times and ground level pen separation
  • catching pen designs make use of front fill or lane fill systems to ensure catching pens are easily maintained and filled
  • each stand is equipped with split catching pen doors for quick open and close, support arms for shearers back supports and a handrail to protect shearers falling from the raised board
  • chutes are recessed into the board and send sheep under the grating into individual count out pens. Sheep tend to fall down the chute rather than needing to be pushed — chutes are 600mm wide providing plenty of room for rams and larger sheep
  • shearers work in relative close contact with each other and can move around the board freely to assist others during difficulty
  • each shearer has an individual work area, including a large shelf for combs, cutters, tool boxes etc.
  • all stands have an individual electrical cut out button in case of an emergency.

The board platform is constructed out of a steel frame for strength and longevity, while the board itself comprises of softwood, tongue and groove slats to minimise blunting of dropped combs and cutters.

Shearers on a straight board system are required to turn woolly sheep upon exiting the catching pen.
